Abstract

ABSTRACT

Mosques in Islamic tradition function not only as centres of worship but also play important roles in social support, welfare, and community hospitality. However, studies on mosque accommodation as part of the imarah masjid agenda remain limited, particularly in the East Coast region of Malaysia. This study examines the motivations, operational models, attraction factors, and management challenges of mosque accommodation in Terengganu. This study employed a qualitative case study approach involving two selected mosques, namely Masjid Kampung Seberang Takir and Masjid Mengabang Telipot. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, field observations, and document analysis before being analysed using thematic analysis. The findings identified four main themes: motivations for providing accommodation, operational and implementation models, user attraction factors, and governance challenges. The study found that mosque accommodation functions as a medium of imarah masjid through the integration of welfare, da‘wah, and Islamic hospitality. Nevertheless, this initiative faces several challenges, including financial constraints, the absence of standard operating guidelines, and varying levels of hospitality-related skills among management personnel. This study enhances understanding of sustainable mosque accommodation management practices in supporting Islamic tourism and broadens the contemporary context of imarah masjid in Malaysia.
